Founded by American architect Harry Parnass and British clothing designer Nicola Pelly, fashion brand Parachute stood at the forefront of cutting-edge design during the 1980s with its cool, androgynous urban apparel and visionary store spaces. This book takes the form of a compendium of themes explored in the McCord Museum’s exhibition, Parachute: Subversive Fashion of the 80s, draws from interviews with key players in the brand’s history, and highlights the McCord’s collection of Parachute garments and archival documents. 

Parachute achieved widespread fame and fortune during the 1980s, becoming both a go-to brand for rock and pop stars in the MTV era, and a darling of the international fashion press. Parachute’s New York store on Wooster Street in SoHo was alegendary downtown locale during the decade, a cool counter-cultural hotspot that drew a sophisticated and artistic clientele. Parnass and Pelly, however, decided to close the business in the early 1990s, and Parachute faded from public consciousness. This retrospective book, and by extension the exhibition, marks the first comprehensive scholarly study and exploration of the brand.
